The Old Smithy, Welcombe

Although this pub is across the border, there is no way we couldn't give it a mention.

The Old Smithy is in the quiet village of Welcombe (a couple of miles seaward from the A39.) However, don't let the sleepy vibe fool you - this is a scattered but tightly knit communtiy with probably more artists per square mile than Hoxton.

The pub, right in the heart of the village, exudes a warm and welcoming feel, all year round. Like a big hug but with pork scratchings. Here you're as likely to bump into a roving band of North Devon surfers as you are into an A-list celebrity, such is this pubs reputation.

It's owned and run by a young local couple who, alongside a coterie of other friendly types, also work the bar and cook the food and in so doing, managed to win 2nd place in the 2007 North Devon food and drink awards.

They regularly host live music and jam nights, table football tournaments, and even the odd Country Fayre. Seek out and enjoy.
