Each summer we usually take our family holiday abroad (the wife is a sun worshiper) but this year we decided to do something different and gave Cornwall a try.
As a keen golfer I was thrilled when the wife suggested Cornwall as it meant I could sneak my clubs into the car and try and squeeze in a round while we were away.
Luckily for me, we chose the week that Bude and North Cornwall golf club hold their annual golf festival for our holiday. I don’t usually play in golf competitions (as I’m not very good) but in the spirit of doing something different this year for our holiday destination, I decided I would do something different as well and entered one of the fun competitions – the Texas Scramble.
You may be asking yourself what on earth is a Texas Scramble? I know I was, I’d heard talk of bandits in my local golf club but cowboys….
After a quick chat with the club pro I soon discovered that the basic idea was actually very simple. A Texas Scramble is a team competition where each golfer gets to play a shot from the previous ‘best’ shot. Clear? Let me make it plain, everyone in the team tee’s off and then you chose which tee shot you think is the best. You mark this shot and then everyone in the team plays their next shot from that point. You do this until the ball is putt out into the hole.
Armed with my newly acquired knowledge I turned up to the clubhouse on a pleasant summer afternoon to meet up with my ‘posse’, Arthur, Steve and Lee. After introductions and discovering that they were all high handicappers like myself I was soon itching to start scrambling.
At exactly ten minutes past four we were off. I have to admit that I was pretty nervous as I placed the ball on the tee, but safe in the knowledge that we already had three good drives to choose from, the nerves soon dissipated and I actually hit the best drive of the lot. I was thrilled, what a start to competitive golf!
I’ll spare you a blow-by-blow account of the entire round. Suffice to say that there was some good golf and some bad golf but most importantly plenty of laughs along the way. We didn’t win the competition but that didn’t matter, the three members I played with were all very friendly and I found the club was very welcoming to none members.
The whole family had a great time in Cornwall. We’ll definitely be coming back to Bude in the future and I’ll definitely be bringing my clubs with me again!
